Laura’s Over the Rainbow Blog

For those of you who are newcomers to my newsletter I frequently include stories about what’s happening in my life and on the farm (Rainbow’s Ark)…the last year and a half have held a lot of trials with my oldest daughter Vanessa’s series of strokes which left her disabled, the house fire that burned down my parents house next door, various animal catastophes and life’s ups and downs….Well, this weekend we had more trials…when Mandi’s beloved French Bulldog, Francis, ran under our pickup truck and was run over….Due to the accident we’ve lost him and he is no longer with us. It has been a depressing weekend for all,  but for none more than Mandi.  She has also had her trials this year after having her dream wedding dissolve a few months into the marriage, a separation and she has now filed for annulment from her husband.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and all of us as we grieve the loss of Francis.

All of you over 40 will be able to relate to this…those unwanted chin hairs that keep popping up….Well, luckily I have to wear reading glasses to see small things and I can never see those hairs until we’re driving in the car and Vanessa looks at me and all of a sudden her mouth gasps open as she’s staring at MY CHIN and she says “Oh Mom, I have to pluck that hair!”  It sounds gross, doesn’t it, but if she can see it across the car, imagine what others with good eye sight can see sprouting out of my face!  So, you can imagine how excited I was when Memaw and I attended the Seattle Gift show this weekend and I saw the Twist n Roll Tweezers being demo-ed….It’s got a coil between two little handles and you simply put it on your face and twist and “Ouch!”  out come the little hairs….It was amazing…So I bought one for Memaw and I and then thought “Hey….what about all my hairy chinned customers that would be as excited as I am about this!”  I’m too afraid to get my chin actually waxed and other than Vanessa acting like a monkey and grooming my face, this seems like an ideal solution to my hairy problem! Farm news- First it was a new batch of baby ducklings hatched on our anniversary - and for my birthday, today,  my peahen (a female peacock) hatched ONE little peachick!  There are 3 more eggs but they still haven’t hatched so they might be duds!  The little chick follows her mama around but by the end of the day she was getting brave and slipping through the chain link fence into the duckpen!  The mama would get so upset and stick her head through the fence and cluck at the chick to come back!  I think this may be where the term “peabrain” came from - I don’t think peafowl are very intelligent!  I’m just afraid something will pick off the chick when she’s out of reach of the mama’s protection.  We’ve named the peachick who is now living in the OTR office, Stuart….I wish I could try putting him in with the new baby but he’s too old and doesn’t know that he’s related to the breed!  Alpaca update…Charisma, my last female due to have a cria might be finally ready to deliver….she’s huge!   She was acting strange today (not as hungry and straining a lot) so I’m hoping tomorrow is the day!

 year ago when I was attending the Northwest Fabric Show I was meeting with my Northcott rep, Bernie, and he showed me a line from someone named Mark Lipinski called Califon…”Do you know who Mark is?” he asked Mandi and I…
Apparently we were out of the loop since we didn’t know who Mark was….Bernie explained Mark is the editor of Quilters Home magazine,quilt designer, teacher and more… I found out Mark was referred to as the “Bad Boy of Quilting”  mostly because he doesn’t mince words….  Mandi and I were hooked and I ordered the entire collection…When we attended our first Quilt Market last May - we kept seeing Mark but we were too shy to go up and introduce ourselves but there was always a crowd of ladies around him…and we would catch glimpses of conversation….”Ooooooh - you wouldn’t believe what MARK wrote in my magazine”…..”Oh - I just love Mark, don’t you!?”  etc…..I wanted to know WHAT DID Mark write in that ladies magazine, anyway!  I mean how tantalizing can an autograph be????   So, imagine my surprise when I got a phone call today from the real Mark Lipinski!  When he said who it was I said “Are you THE MARK LIPINSKI????”  and he laughed and said YES!  He was calling to thank me for ordering his new line (how brilliant is that!)  So - of course I looked up Quilters Home on line and signed up for the magazine as well!  So - check out the new line from Mark - called Califon by Northcott - it comes in two colorways - Black/white and Bright!  The links for the free patterns are included as well as the link to Mark’s website - www.marklipinski.com   See the lines at

Farm news- Ooh - don’t read if you’re faint of heart….I had a tragedy this morning when I began my morning feeding routne….I always start with the ducks, goose and chickens…mostly because hey see me coming across the lawn and they all run out quacking, honking and squawking to greet me (sounds annoying, but it’s really endearing!)  I cut up hamburger buns each morning and divide them among the fowl….so they get really excited for breakfast!!
When I got  to the new duck pen that Randy just built (this houses the teenage ducklings) ONE OF  THE DUCKS WAS DECAPITATED~!!!  So gross…..so sad….so upsetting!  Apparently an owl (or other night flying bird) flew in and nabbed the poor little thing (I don’t think this one’s name was Lucky!) but for some reason only took the head and left the  rest! What  was up with  that!?  It left the meatiest part….I’d like to think the other ducks ganged up on the culprit  and scared it away…kind of like that U Tube video of the wildebeasts and the lions…but that probably wasn’t the case!  Alpaca update - still no cria for Charisma…she was acting kind of weird the other day but has since returned to normal behavior!  I’ll start carrying my camera in my pocket just in case!

Farm news- how exciting this morning when I went out to feed, I had a big surprise….my little Khaki Campbell duck who’s been sitting on her clutch of eggs back in the woods, brought 10 little baby ducklings back to the farm!  They are so cute….I searched all over for my camera and of course I can’t find it!  I had Mandi come out and help and we rounded them up and put them into the little duck pen so they will stay safe and sound!!

Family News  - Yahoo - Tori arrives home tonight!  I’m excited to have her come back home - 3 weeks away has been a bit too long - but camp was a big success and she had a wonderful time with her cousins and in Yorba Linda.
Mandi and I took the whole day off today (Sunday) so we’ll be busy on Monday!
But, no worries, we’ll work as fast as we can to get the orders out!

Family News - Tori finished at camp today and is  now spending a few days with her California cousins which she has been looking forward to…Camp was a big success and she really enjoyed her time - she lost 7.4 lbs in the 2 weeks which is pretty impressive!  The Prince from Saudi Arabia was kicked out (according to Tori) for offering one of the counselors $500 to have sex with him!  Gene Simmons daughter (from Kiss) has attended the camp for several years (Tori says she looks like a beautiful  model) and I’m sure we’ll hear lots more stories in the weeks to come!  Randy found out he won Ambassadors Club again….FedEx’s second runner up to President’s Club which means we have another free trip anywhere we want…We never used what he won last year so I am going with Memaw to San Diego the end of this month to cash in that trip!  I told Randy that HE and I have to use this trip TOGETHER!!  Somehow we’ll find a way to leave our crazy household for a few days…

Farm News - you know we love our cats around here and have 7 indoor cats…Well, we try to keep them inside…some of them are bound and determined to get outside and the worst is Tori’s cat, Xander…He’s a  lovely pure white long haired cat and every morning he paws at the door (or windows since he’ll actually jump off the roof) and meows pitifully until we get tired of listening to him and let him out!  Once he gets out, Xander wanders all over - not only our farm, but the neighbors and over to Memaw’s and Bebops  and even Barneys….Nessa’s cat Mazzy also likes to go outside but he takes one stroll around the house and then likes to come back inside.  So the other morning I’m feeding and Mac and Frances (the dogs) are helping me…when all of a sudden I hear the squeal of a baby bunny when it gets caught by something.  Mac and Frances also hear the sound and start running around looking for the source…Now, both these dogs are a few biscuits shy of a full box and run right by Xander sitting in the bushes with a baby grey bunny in his mouth!  I on the other hand spot the killer cat and say to him “XANDER, YOU PUT THAT BUNNY DOWN RIGHT NOW!” Xander looks at me with innocent eyes and says (now you must pretend you have a mouthful of marshmallows, or  a fluffy bunny) “What bunny?  What are you talking about, Mom!  I would never try to eat one of your bunnies”  and then opened his mouth and the bunny hopped away…”Oh…..THAT bunny….I was just trying to help him find his way back home.”  That crazy cat!

Farm News….As most of you know, Mandi lives in an apartment connected to the shop - so she has her own place, but it’s still on “The Farm”….She has her little French Bulldog, named Frances and he and Mac, my goldendoodle, are the best of friends.  Luckily Frances is a sturdy little guy since Mac and he wrestle pretty hard sometimes….So - although I only have one dog, technically, there are usually two of them hanging around with me, especially when it’s feeding time (morning and afternoon). Anytime you have two dogs, they suddenly become a “pack” and rather than listen to their masters it’s much more fun to listen to the other dog…For instance Frances might suggest to Mac they run across the street and play with Holly - the Golden Retriever (they are NOT supposed to cross the road) or run next door to Jimbo’s house and race around with his 3 dogs… So this morning I’m watching the two of them run around….they burst into a bush and out fly two chickens….Frances loves to “play” with Goodie the Goose….which mostly means Goodie chases Frances away from her ducklings, scolding him fiercely!  So, they’re running side by side and all of a sudden that dog food commercial comes into my head…you know the one “Kibbles and Bits….Kibbles and Bits…I’m gonna get me some Kibbles and Bits”   except I heard different words coming from Mac and Frances  “Bunnies and Chicks…..bunnies and chicks….I’m gonna get me some Bunnies and Chicks!”  Mac’s favorite pasttime is  to try to catch the free range bunnies….and of couse Frances has to come along for the chase…Luckily they are too slow most of the time!

Family News - Memaw and Bebop’s house is just about  DONE!  They are moving in their stuff and getting it all organized and it’s absolutely lovely - My mom did a fantastic job picking out everything and the house is so beautiful…I’ll try to take photos so you can see how wonderful it is!….  Vanessa’s trike arrived and she LOVES it!  She was a little frightened at first but now she’s got the hang of it and she’s cruising up and down the street….I’ll also take photos of her on her new set of wheels!  AND….Randy and  I are celebrating  our 28th wedding anniversary this weekend and then it’ my 48th BIRTHDAY!  Dang….I’m getting old!

Familiy News -  I booked our Houston Quilt Market trip for Mandi and I in October…we had so much fun in Portland we decided to give the “big daddy” showa try as well! So - what will the weather be like in Houston in October?  Washington is cool and rainy!  Tori gets home a week from today and I’ll be glad when she’s back home - I miss that girl!

Farm News  - nothing too exciting happening on  the farm other than Randy  got my new duck pen set up….not the Duck Sanctuary I was hoping for, but it serves it’s purpose…..I  still had one peachick and 2 ducklings living in the dining room and I added them to  the 12 teen ducklings that were ready to move into the new pen….I have 3 grouping of ducks - the 7 left from the original flock (the ones that Wile E. Coyote kept picking off - down from a total of 15 in early Spring) one of which is sitting on a clutch of eggs deep in the forest  - she comes out once a day to eat and drink and one of these days she’ll bring her little babies with her ( I hope!)This group  roams all around the farm…the 2nd group is Goodie the Goose’s dozen  which includes 2 chickens which also think they’re ducks….they sleep in the chicken run but are able to roam free during the day….and then the 3rd group is the last batch of babies….who are now moved into the new duck pen….I tried putting the peachick in with them and although he loved his duckling brothers when they lived together in the dining room (although he couldn’t understand their fascination with water) having 12 other duck mates was too overwhelming for him…So -  I’ve moved him into the parrot cage in my office.  It’s interesting to me how ducklings grow in size so fast and yet peacocks, who grow to be much bigger than ducks mature at a slower pace….  One of my peahens is also sitting on a clutch of eggs in the peacock pen - the first time - and my peacocks are 3 years old…
